Tisochrysis lutea - Live
Tisochrysis lutea – Live Phytoplankton Culture
Tisochrysis lutea is a golden-brown marine phytoplankton species prized for its rich nutritional profile, particularly its high concentration of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an essential omega-3 fatty acid important to the growth, development, and reproduction of many marine organisms.
Widely used in marine aquaculture, this small-celled microalga provides a valuable source of nutrition for copepods, rotifers, bivalves, and other suitable filter-feeding organisms.
At 4th Dimension Aquatics, our Tisochrysis lutea is cultivated in isolated cultures under controlled conditions, providing a dedicated source of live phytoplankton for reef aquariums and aquaculture applications.
Nutritional Benefits
- Rich in DHA Omega-3: Supplies an important fatty acid involved in cellular development, growth, and reproductive processes in marine organisms.
- Small Cell Size: Typically approximately 4–6 microns, making it suitable for a variety of small filter feeders and live-feed cultures.
- Highly Digestible: Its relatively delicate cell covering makes it a valuable food source for organisms capable of consuming phytoplankton.
- Natural Carotenoids: Contains pigments such as fucoxanthin, contributing to its characteristic golden-brown coloration.
- Live-Feed Enrichment: Frequently used in aquaculture to improve the nutritional quality of zooplankton raised as food for fish and invertebrates.
Feeding Applications
Tisochrysis lutea is particularly valuable for:
- Copepods & Rotifers: Supports live-feed production and provides DHA-rich nutrition for appropriate cultured species.
- Clams & Bivalves: Offers appropriately sized phytoplankton cells for many suspension-feeding species.
- Marine Larvae: Commonly used in aquaculture feeding programs, including the nutritional enrichment of live prey.
- Reef Aquariums: Provides an additional live phytoplankton food source for suitable filter-feeding organisms and the microfauna that contribute to the marine food web.
Recommended Dosing
Reef Aquariums: Begin with 5 mL per 25 gallons of aquarium water daily. Adjust dosage and frequency as needed based on aquarium size, livestock, feeding response, and nutrient levels.
Copepod & Live-Feed Cultures: Adjust feeding quantities and frequency according to culture volume, population density, and consumption.
Storage & Handling
- Keep refrigerated; do not freeze.
- Shake gently before each use to redistribute settled cells.
- Keep the container sealed when not in use.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to heat and direct sunlight.
- Use while fresh for optimal culture quality.
